Our Field Trip to Boston

Going to Boston was exciting!  There were many fun things to do at the  Boston Children's Museum.

There were things to climb.  The New Balance Climbing exhibit had floor mats and nets around it.  It went up to the ceiling which was VERY high!  It was like a maze.  When you got to the top you had to turn around and come down.  There was a climbing rock wall.  Chris made it all the way to number 10.  There was a place to climb in the Construction Zone.
The Kid Power exhibit was fun.  You could buckle your seatbelt and pull yourself up.  There was an applause when you came down.  Lots of us were able to make the lights go on by turning the crank.  We made a fan go on by turning a big 3-person crank.  There was a giant pulley that you let go and shot a tennis ball up to the ceiling.  Some of us got it to go to the very top!

Bubbles were extraordinary!  You could pull a big rope and make a giant bubble!  You could pick up a hula hoop and make a enormous bubbles that wiggled.
There was a fantastic music room.  You could drive a band bus and make the windshield wipers go.  You could use a microphone and sing on the stage.  You could conduct an orchestra.

Scenes from Friday

Here's a glimpse of some of what we did on Friday.  Not captured on film are the songs, dance and movement we do through the day or the spelling test and written work.  We are very busy and the kids work super hard.  The camera battery became exhausted before we were through!

Our Trip to Meadow Ledge Farm

Bump, bump, bump went the schoolbus.  We rode the bus to Meadow Ledge Farm.  We got off the bus and saw a lot of apples and some pear trees.   We met Farmer Lou.  He told us not to whack the bees.  He said if a bee landed on your apple, put the apple gently on the ground and step slowly away.

We got to ride a tractor.  We had to sit criss cross applesauce.  The tractor went on a dirt road with lots of puddles and mud.  We saw a pond.   The tractor had no sides and no seat belts.  The tractor trailer had big wheels.  We saw a lot of other tractors.  We saw a silo.

We met Lenny.  He showed us how to pick apples.  Lenny was cool.  He had a bucket with a strap and a bottom that opened so he could put the apples in a bucket.  The bottom opened up.

When we got back to the picnic tables we got eat snack and drink apple cider.
The apple cider and the apples were delicious.

It was a fun, exciting and yummy day!

Math Problem Solving

We had a problem.    What is the best way to count a whole pile of blocks?  If you count by ones it would be easy to make a mistake and lose track of which blocks you had already counted.  One student suggested that we count by fives.  What a great idea!  This is what the project looked like in our classroom.  Look at the concentration of the students!

We wrote down what we did and recorded our tallies.  Here is a sample.

We learned several things about problem solving.

1.  Think about the problem.
2.  Make a plan.  ( Our plan was to make groups. )
3.  Draw or write what you did.
4.  Check your work.

Great work first graders!

News from the Classroom

As we wind down the year I think about how far the children have come.  Reading is such a key part of first grade.  Here is some information that gives you just an idea of how big the reading at home part is in this whole process.

As we look forward to the summer, please please read with your child EVERY day.

Consider the evidence.

Trip to Charmingfare Farm

Our Trip to Charmingfare Farm

The animals at Charmingfare farm were GREAT!  We loved feeding them.  There were many animals.  Some of the ones we really liked were the baby goats, sheep, and the lynx.

We got to pick up the baby goats.  The baby goats were fast!    They were white, black and brown.  They were cute!  One goat was pregnant.  And one goat had a beard.    We played chase with the goats.    One goat ate Mrs. McNamee’s map.   The goats were up to mischief.  There was poop everywhere.

Baa!   Baa!  Said the sheep.   They looked like fuzzy cotton balls.  One sheep yelled at Kylie.  One sheep back talked to Noah.  One sheep ran over Caitlin’s water bottle.    There were two pens of sheep.

The lynx were acting like guards.  They are a kind of cat with pointy ears and short tails.   They were gray with black markings on them.

We went on a fun tractor ride.  It was amazing.  We saw little houses.   In one car the kids had to sit on hay.   We also went on a horse ride.  We had to take turns because there were so many kids.  Some kids were squished.  The horses’ names were Joy and Jewel.    They were 10 and 9 years old.  They were really big and beautiful.    They were black and strong.    They weighed more than 2000 pounds each!!

We all had many adventures at Charmingfare Farm.   It was the best day ever!

Public Works Visits Bartlett

May 21, 2013
Here is our thank you letter to the great Goffstown Public Works Department for coming to our school and sharing all their big trucks with us!!

Dear Public Works Department,

Thank you for coming to Bartlett School.   Thank you for teaching us about the things you do and the equipment you use.

Thank you for showing us your trucks and letting us climb in them.  We loved honking the horn.  We liked putting on your gear.  Your gear is really bright so people can see you at night.

Something interesting we learned was that when rain causes a road to crack you fix it.  We learned that you paint the lines on the road, too.  You have many machines that you use.  They are so huge and amazing.  Some of your trucks even had claws.

Love,

Mrs. McNamee’s First Grade

PS,  We hope you can come again next year and the pants are great!

100th Day of School

On the 100th day of school Mrs. McNamee’s son lent us his Legos.  We each got a bag of Legos.  We had to put them into ten piles of ten.  That way we could have 100 Legos to build something with.  We could build whatever we wanted.  If you didn’t want one piece you could trade it for a different one.

We did it instead of centers.  Some kids made castles.  Some kids made a school or a play station.  Some kids made an evil scene or battles.

It was an epic, spectacular day!
