We had a problem. What is the best way to count a whole pile of blocks? If you count by ones it would be easy to make a mistake and lose track of which blocks you had already counted. One student suggested that we count by fives. What a great idea! This is what the project looked like in our classroom. Look at the concentration of the students!
We wrote down what we did and recorded our tallies. Here is a sample.
We learned several things about problem solving.
1. Think about the problem.
2. Make a plan. ( Our plan was to make groups. )
3. Draw or write what you did.
4. Check your work.
Great work first graders!
